Battling the Summer Heat with Ice Cream and Tiesta Tea

The summer heat in Texas is so unbearable that everyone should stock several pints of ice cream in the fridge. While shopping for ice cream, I was distracted by these colorful Tiesta Teas in the bulk aisle. I've never heard of them before so I bagged a few flavors to try.  I actually love drinking hot tea after eating vast quantities of ice cream. Something about the warmth of tea and the coolness of ice cream blends incredibly well together.

Milk Tea's Favorite Cookie: Earl Grey from Fortnum and Mason

I very rarely take milk with my tea. My favorite sencha just doesn't go well with milk. And matcha can go well with milk but I don't normally dilute the flavors of my matcha with milk. But a lot of people love to pair milk and tea. Tea with a splash of milk and biscuits just sounds so proper! So, sometimes I do take milk. But when I do, it has to be Darjeeling, Assam, or Earl Grey.

Fresh Spring Pea Soup

March in Texas means Spring is upon us. Vibrant, green grass shoots and leaves sprout from what withered looking branches and bare ground, flooding the Hill Country in waves of bright color. My favorite color is the intense, bright green of a nascent bud or blade of grass. Today I'll share a recipe that perfectly captures this color and the essence of spring to come.

Celebrating Lunar New Year in Texas

My parents left last week to celebrate Lunar New Year as it should be celebrated - in Asia. Weeks of preparation culminate in a festive occasion young and old look forward to every year. It truly is the biggest holiday of the year, one where the entire country celebrates. So, if you are not in Asia right now, exchanging well wishes and giving/receiving lucky money bags, how can you participate in the festivities?

Japanese Sakura Blend Tea

Come spring time in Japan, and everything - I mean everything, from macarons to white rice is flavored with cherry blossoms. They are incredibly beautiful, no doubt. They smell wonderful. And they will likely fall in your food anyway (if you are eating outdoors). As for taste - for me, I don't love it but I don't hate it. I buy it because I love the fragrance of the subtly sweet and earthy cherry blossom. And, it looks quite pretty. Now that the weather is resoundly cold everywhere in the US (yes, even in Texas), I brewed some of this to remind myself of spring to come.
